The Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) is a mandatory requirement for all teachers in India. CTET is a national-level examination conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

SCERT TET is a state-level examination conducted by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERTs).

Introduction: Education is the cornerstone of any society, and teachers play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our world.

To ensure that educators meet certain standards, various countries have introduced Teacher Eligibility Test (TET).

Teacher Eligibility Test

Teaching is a noble profession that demands continuous growth and development. In the educational landscape, Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) are pivotal to ensure that teachers meet the necessary qualifications and standards.

Among these, TET 2 holds a special place as it serves as a stepping stone for teachers to advance in their careers.

TET 2, short for Teacher Eligibility Test 2. TET 2 is the second stage of the TET exam. It is the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) for upper primary teachers, i.e., teachers for classes 6 to 8.

It is conducted by the State Education Boards of India to assess the eligibility of candidates for appointment as teachers in government schools.

  • while TET 2 is for teachers who want to teach classes 6 to 8.

TET is mandatory

In 2011, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) made it mandatory for all teachers to qualify the TET within two years of their appointment.

This meant that all teachers who were appointed before 2011 had to qualify the TET by 2013, or they would be ineligible to continue teaching.

TET is mandatory for promotions

The NCTE also made it mandatory for all teachers to qualify the TET for promotions. This means that all teachers who want to be promoted to a higher position must first qualify the TET.

In 2023, the NCTE issued a notification stating that TET 2 qualified teachers are eligible for SA promotions. SA promotions are promotions to the position of SGT.

In addition to being eligible for direct recruitment, TET 2 qualified teachers are also eligible for promotions within the government school system.

The specific criteria for promotion vary from state to state, but most states require teachers to have a certain number of years of experience and to have passed the TET 2 exam.

This is a good news for TET 2 qualified teachers, as it means that they now have a better chance of getting promoted.

It also means that schools will have more qualified and competent teachers in the position of School Assistant.

TET is mandatory for teachers

TET is mandatory for teachers to receive promotions as per norms of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).

The Secondary Grade Teachers (SGT) must qualify in Paper-II of the TET for promotion to the School Assistant (SA) position.

Similarly, qualification in the TET Paper-II is essential for the promotion of School Assistants as Headmasters.

The Education Department in the past had taken up promotions without holding the TET. However, this was contested by some teachers in the High Court, which ruled for holding the TET for teacher promotions.
