Scene is Suriya’s third theatrical release of the year. The movie generated good buzz as hit Malayalam director Jithu Madhavan enters Tamil cinema, Nazriya Fahadh returns to Kollywood after 12 years, and Naslen plays a negative role for the first time. With an interesting team on board, the film released in theaters today. Check out our review to see if it delivers a hat-trick for Suriya.

Story:

DSP Prem Raj (Suriya) wants to resign from his job, but his chief rejects the request because of his great track record in solving serious crimes quickly. Unwilling to lose him, the department asks him to crack a new murder case that resembles the pattern of the Perfume Killer (Tovino Thomas). Meanwhile, a surprising truth about Prem Raj is revealed, but he still takes on the case with the help of his assistant, Maya (Nazriya Fahadh). How Prem tracks down the killer and whether his secret creates trouble forms the rest of the story.

Plus Points:

Director Jithu Madhavan treats this crime thriller with a good dose of fun and situational comedy. Instead of keeping the mood heavy and dark throughout, the writing focuses on simple humour and quirky character behaviour. This lighthearted treatment makes the film easy to watch.

Suriya fits the role of DSP Prem Raj very well. His styling, body language, and calm way of dealing with situations feel quite fresh compared to his usual serious cop roles. He handles the comedy effortlessly, especially in scenes where he makes light of serious situations.

Nazriya Fahadh gives good support to Suriya as the story moves forward. The banter between the two leads creates several fun moments, with the proposal scene in the mortuary being a major highlight.

Naslen does a neat job as a first-time villain. His cool attitude and casual behaviour while committing crimes make his character interesting to watch. On the technical side, the visuals look clean, and Sushin Shyam’s background score lifts the overall energy of the scenes.

Minus Points:

Even though the comedy and scenes keep things moving, the core plot is a basic investigation story. The director could have given a stronger backstory for the young villain to explain why he commits these murders. Without a solid motive, the conflict feels a bit weak.

The first half moves at a slow pace and works only in bits and pieces. Viewers who expect strong, intense face-offs between the hero and the villain will have to wait until near the end of the film. Spreading their interactions throughout the story would have created better drama.

Lal provides good laughs in the beginning as a senior officer, but he completely disappears in the second half and only returns for the climax. A few investigation scenes involving Suriya’s parents also feel too convenient to believe easily. Tovino Thomas is okay in his role, but one naturally expects better screen time for an actor of his caliber.

Technical Aspects:

Jithu Madhavan’s direction is decent, and his attempt to present a crime investigation with quirky humour works reasonably well. The cinematography is neat, but the editing could have been sharper in the first hour to avoid drag. Sushin Shyam’s background music is a big plus, and the sound design supports the movie well. Production values are fine, though the dubbing for a few minor characters could have been better.

Verdict:

On the whole, Scene is a different kind of crime comedy that relies on eccentric characters and situational humor rather than high-stakes action. Suriya leads from the front with a solid performance, backed by decent support from Nazriya Fahadh and Naslen. The second half has enough moments to impress the audience. While the slow-moving first half and an underdeveloped villain backstory are noticeable drawbacks, the film still works as an easy one-time watch for those looking for a fresh take on the crime comedy genre.
