Summer Holidays is the latest Telugu film featuring Rohan Roy and Arun Dev in key roles. The nostalgic drama has hit the big screens today. Read on to know how it fares.

Story:

Set in 2001, Ravuri Venkatesh aka RV (Arun Dev) faces immense pressure from his father (Harsha Vardhan) to excel in his studies. However, he wants to explore life beyond academics, something his father is never happy about. His mother, Janaki (Vasuki), takes him to his grandmother’s village, Thotavaripalem, during the summer holidays. There, he meets KV aka Kasi Venkatesawarlu (Rohan Roy), a boy who has little interest in studies and wants to earn money to lead a happy life. The two become friends in no time, and the events that follow form the crux of the story.

Plus Points:

The biggest strength of the movie is the way it captures the childhood memories of 90s kids. Scenes of playing in mango fields, swimming in rivers and playing cricket with friends bring back the charm of those carefree days. These moments are handled well and strike a chord with viewers who grew up during that period. The film gets its nostalgic setting right without making these portions feel forced.

Rohan Roy delivers a convincing performance, particularly in the way he portrays the lifestyle and struggles of children from lower-middle-class families during that time. He handles the emotional scenes with maturity, while his natural dialogue delivery brings in humour and keeps the proceedings lively.

Arun Dev also makes a good impression as a boy who is scared of his father but wants to support his new friend. His introverted nature works well against Rahul’s extroverted personality, and the contrast between the two adds to their friendship.

Jayasudha makes her presence felt despite having limited screen time, while Rajiv Kanakala also does well in his role. The emotional scenes between Harshini and Rahul work out well, especially in the second half. The music further adds to the film’s breezy and nostalgic mood.

Minus Points:

The story does not offer much novelty and follows a familiar path. While the film has its share of emotional and entertaining moments, the basic storyline feels predictable. The neat narration and the moments between the lead characters help keep things interesting.

The film also takes a few cinematic liberties that are difficult to accept. For instance, a father who has been extremely strict throughout the film suddenly changes his attitude after listening to his son’s monologue in the climax. Such developments feel convenient rather than convincing, and a few other scenes also fall into the same category.

Jayasudha’s character needed better development, as the film does not explore her role as much as it could have. Kushi Soni also gets very little scope to showcase her talent. Vasuki’s character needed a stronger emotional arc to make her presence more meaningful. The climax, too, could have had a greater emotional impact with better-written moments.

Technical Aspects:

Writer and director Srikar Nayan G takes a safe route with a familiar story and presents it in a decent manner. He succeeds in bringing out the nostalgic setting and the bond between the lead characters. However, the writing needed more depth, particularly in the character arcs and a few important emotional scenes.

Sinjith Yerramilli is one of the film’s strengths. His background score elevates several moments, while the songs blend pleasantly into the narrative. Sai Prakash Ummadisingu’s cinematography captures the village atmosphere well, and Santosh Naidu’s editing keeps the proceedings smooth. The production values are decent.

Verdict:

On the whole, Summer Holidays is a watchable nostalgic drama that brings back memories of childhood and simpler times. Rohan Roy and Arun Dev deliver decent performances, and their friendship forms the emotional backbone of the film. The nostalgic moments and music add to its appeal. However, the familiar storyline, underdeveloped characters and a few unconvincing scenes hold it back. All in all, it is a decent family watch, especially for those who enjoy stories that take them back to their childhood days.
