‘Thug Life’, starring Kamal Haasan and directed by Mani Ratnam, has reportedly been fined Rs 25 lakh.
This fine has been imposed by the National Multiplex Association because the makers of ‘Thug Life’ decided to release the film on OTT (Over-The-Top) platforms much earlier than the standard 8-week window usually followed between theatrical and digital releases, especially in North India.
The film’s underwhelming box office performance is cited as the reason for this early OTT release, as the makers aimed to cut losses.
The digital rights deal with Netflix was also reportedly renegotiated to a lower amount due to the film’s poor theatrical run.
The film centers around Rangaraya Sakthivel (Kamal Haasan), a feared mafia kingpin in New Delhi. The story unfolds with a focus on his relationships and the intricate web of betrayal and revenge.
The film is jointly produced by Kamal Haasan (under Raaj Kamal Films International), Mani Ratnam (under Madras Talkies), and Siva Ananth, and R. Mahendran.
