On 1-5-2023, the Lok Sabha Secretariat disqualified Afzal Ansari, representing the Ghazipur Parliamentary Constituency of Uttar Pradesh, from membership of Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction, i.e., 29-4-2023.

He was convicted by the Court of Additional Sessions Judge, M.P./M.L.A. Court, Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh in accordance with the provisions of Article 102(1)(e) of the Constitution and Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

Background:

The Court sentenced Lok Sabha member Afzal Ansari to 4 years imprisonment along with fine of Rs. 1 lakh for committing offences under Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986. He was booked for kidnapping the Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Nandkishore Rungta and the murder of then MLA Krishnanand Rai in 2005.
