The Ministry of Women and Child Development has allocated Rs 272 crore from the Nirbhaya Fund for residential facilities for female students and working women at Delhi University.

During her participation at the Vikas Bharat Ambassador-Nari Shakti Conclave in Delhi University’s north campus, Union Minister Smriti Irani declared that the Ministry of Women and Child Development has sanctioned Rs 272 crore from the Nirbhaya Fund for providing residential accommodation to girls and working women at Delhi University. She brought out the initiative’s significance, aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed India by empowering women engaged in higher education and the workforce.


The allocation of funds from the Nirbhaya Fund reaffirms the government’s dedication to offering secure and suitable living environments for women students and professionals.

The approved funds will be used to improve residential accommodations in women’s hostels throughout Delhi University. This will involve providing 1,000 beds with advanced security features like CCTV surveillance.

Furthermore, gender-sensitive amenities will be integrated to prioritize the overall well-being of female residents. Smriti Irani’s announcement echoes her previous pledge to allocate Nirbhaya Fund resources for women’s hostels in Delhi University, which she made on March 7, 2024.


The focus on strengthening security measures resonates with the government’s larger goal of creating safe spaces for women to succeed and excel in their academic endeavors.
