The 2023 population decline is greater than the 2022 decline, which ended six decades of growth since the Great Famine under Mao Zedong . The sudden removal of strict zero-Covid restrictions in late 2022 led to a dramatic viral resurgence, leading to a surge in deaths. China’s birth rate has declined over the years due to the former one-child policy and rapid urbanization.
